Vasai Fort, or Fortaleza de São Sebastião de Baçaim, is a massive 110-acre 16th-century Portuguese coastal fort in Vasai, Palghar district, Maharashtra. Located ~45 km from Palghar, it was the primary Portuguese maritime base, featuring ruined churches, watchtowers, and fortifications. Now protected by the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI), it is a popular historical tourist destination

Significance: It was the Portuguese headquarters in the North, second only to Goa in importance, acting as a major naval base and shipbuilding center.
Ownership Timeline: Initially under the Sultan of Gujarat (early 15th century), taken over by the Portuguese (1530s), captured by the Marathas (1739), and finally passed to the British (1817).
Architecture: The fort features a mix of Indo-Portuguese architecture, with large, impressive stone walls surrounded by the sea on three sides.
Key Ruins: Visitors can explore the ruins of Saint Joseph's Church (1546), various bastions, water tanks, and, from the fort's walls, view the Vasai Creek and Arabian Sea.
