During the Second World War, there were a number of horrific war crimes and atrocities committed by different armies. Towards the end of the conflict in Europe, the Germans launched their counteroffensive towards the Ardennes Forest which became known as 'The Battle of the Bulge.' This saw incredibly intense fighting between the German Wehrmacht and the US Army. During one December afternoon however, the German Army and specifically Kampfgruppe Peiper, led by Joachim Peiper committed a terrible massacre of US Soldiers near to a crossroads.
Around 100 American soldiers had been captured following the brief skirmish with Peiper's tanks, and they had surrendered to the enemy becoming Prisoners of War. However Peiper was incredibly frustrated at the fact this incident had slowed down his advance, and the US prisoners were forced into a field near to the Baugnez Crossroads. After being kept here and rounded up, the German soldiers then fired their machine guns into the American soldiers, killing dozens in a huge slaughter. Following this they then administered coup de graces to the American soldiers, killing at least 84. Some Americans managed to escape to a nearby Cafe, but the Germans then burned this down too.
The Malmedy Massacre was discovered then a month later as the Americans advanced and seized the land where the massacre took place. After the Second World War the perpetrators of the massacre including Joachim Peiper were placed on trial in the Malmedy Trials, and dozens were sentenced to death. However no executions ever occurred in punishment for the slaughter, as it was claimed that the men had been beaten and tortured to admit their atrocities.
