HMS Upholder was a compact but capable submarine, 70 m long with a 7 m beam and displacing 1,850 tonnes on the surface and 2,400 submerged. She could dive beyond 200 m and reach over 20 knots underwater, driven by a single‑shaft propulsion system.
Her armament included six 533 mm bow tubes, twelve reloads, Sub‑Harpoon missiles, wire‑guided torpedoes, and mines. She carried a full suite of sonar systems—towed array, bow, range and intercept, flank array—and a navigation radar. The crew consisted of seven officers and thirty‑seven ratings.
In Royal Navy service, Upholder was laid down in 1983, launched in 1986, commissioned in 1990, and withdrawn in 1994 as defence priorities shifted. Her first career was short. The class was retired almost as soon as it arrived. Canada acquired her in 1998, and she returned to service in 2015, where she remains active.
