After the 1968 Japan Grand Prix, the Isuzu Motor Company made an aggressive decision to tackle not one but two categories at the same time, developing an under 2 liter prototype for Group 6 (the R6), and an over 5 liter car for Group 7 (the R7). After testing and development, the safer and (slightly) less expensive R6 was focused on.
Taking cues from the very successful Porsche 906, as well as the Nissan 380, the chassis was built to ride as low to the ground as possible, along with the sleekest aerodynamic body they could muster. Unfortunately, the car was not as exotic as it appeared, and due to the use of steel tubes the car came in at over 630 kilos, possibly the heaviest in the under 2 liter prototype class.
Mechanically the car was mostly made up of Bellett GTR parts, including a revised version of the 1.6 liter 117 engine pushing 150 horsepower. While not as sophisticated as their contemporaries, the R6 still managed to break down almost immediately in practice for the 1969 Japan Grand Prix, and would repeatedly do so during the event.
After taking a year off, the car returned in 1971 in spyder form for the 500 kilometer race at Fuji, finishing 4th, followed by a 5th, a 6th, and another 5th. Perhaps hoping the project had turned a corner, Isuzu came back in 1972 and scored almost no results. With that, the R6 project was closed.
