🇨🇦 National News
2026 kicks off with new tax regulations. The CPP ceiling has risen to $74,600, and Employment Insurance (EI) premiums have increased. Food prices are expected to jump by up to 6% this year. On the legislative side, Bill C-3 now makes it easier for "Lost Canadians" born abroad to pass citizenship to their children. Also, Global Affairs Canada issued a travel warning for Venezuela due to the ongoing political crisis.
🏙️ Major Cities
• Toronto: Named the "New Year's Capital of the World," surpassing Las Vegas. However, experts warn of a significant price drop in the condo market.
• Vancouver: Flights were disrupted after an Air India pilot was arrested just before takeoff.
• Calgary: A major water main break has triggered a "boil water advisory" for several northwest neighborhoods.
• Montreal: Scientists at McGill University have launched a groundbreaking project to 3D-print human lungs.
🏔️ The West & Prairies

❄️ The North
Aftershocks continue in Yukon following a massive 7.0 earthquake on New Year's Eve. In the Northwest Territories, tax breaks for diamond mines have been extended, while Nunavut’s major hydroelectric project is moving toward fast-track approval.
🌲 New Brunswick (NB)
A tragic fatal fire in Saint John is under investigation. Premier Susan Holt announced plans for 11 new collaborative care clinics and 6 new schools for 2026. The review period for the Official Languages Act has been shortened to five years.
🌊 Nova Scotia (NS)
RCMP are investigating a weekend shooting near Halifax. On a positive note, income assistance rates have been increased for low-income residents. Also, three local NHL stars have officially secured their spots on the 2026 Olympic roster.
🥔 Prince Edward Island (PEI)
Despite freezing temperatures, the traditional "Polar Bear Dip" took place in Charlottetown. The province has unveiled a massive $1.6 billion infrastructure budget for new hospitals and schools. Travelers are warned of potential freezing rain today.
⚓ Newfoundland and Labrador (NL)
A new panel has been appointed to review the multi-billion dollar Churchill Falls energy deal. In St. John’s, the city is tackling record homelessness with new social housing contracts. Police are also warning seniors about a phone scam involving the Premier’s name.
