With tongue in cheek and a hint of irony, Anthea Pokroy delivers a satirical and wonderfully imaginative examination of prejudice in this TEDxJohannesburg 2013 talk. She skilfully turns what is often a highly charged emotional discussion into a digestible, illuminating one that warns of the ever-present dangers of racial discrimination and it's worst possible consequences. Initially inspired by an aesthetic appreciation for the unique and romantic colour palette of a redhead, her journey morphs into a fascinating exploration of the self where she examines aspects of her own identity within the context of her South African and Jewish heritage.
Artist Anthea Pokroy has photographed 500 redheaded men, women and children for her first solo exhibition -- 'I Collect Gingers'. The project, which took almost three years to complete, explores prejudice, racial classification and even the prospect of a "ginger utopia".
In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience.
