Episode 864: The war
“Dhrtarashtra asked, “After the Pāṇḍavas returned, how did they fight with the remaining forces? Which heroes in my army held back which enemies?”
Sañjaya said: “O great king! As soon as the Pāṇḍava forces returned, they began fighting. Like clouds covering the sun, they covered Droṇa with arrows. Seeing this, our warriors fought them fiercely.
The dust raised by the Pāṇḍavas spread everywhere. No one could see where Droṇa was. For a moment, we thought he had been killed.
Seeing that, Duryodhana shouted: ‘O kings! With all your strength hold the Pāṇḍava army!’
Your son Durmarṣaṇa saw Bhīma & rushed angrily with arrows to kill him. Bhīma angrily shot arrows at him. A dreadful duel arose.
On another side, Krtavarma stopped Sātyaki from reaching Droṇa. They clashed like mad elephants.
Elsewhere, Saindhava prevented Kṣatravarma from reaching Droṇa. A fierce battle ensued.
Subāhu blocked Yuyutsu from reaching Droṇa. Yuyutsu cut Subāhu’s pillar-like arms with sharp arrows.
Elsewhere, Śalya stopped Dharmarāja. They fought fiercely. Bahlika blocked Drupada. They fought furiously.
Vinda-Anuvinda fell upon Virāṭa and his army. A terrible god-and-demon-like battle arose between them.
Bhutakarma stopped Nakula’s son Śatānīka, but Śatānīka cut his arms and head with 3 sharp arrows.
Vivisamti stopped Sutasoma. Though Vivimati was his paternal uncle, Sutasoma angrily wounded him and stood fearless.
Bhīmaratha killed Śālva. Chitrasena’s son stopped Śrutakarma who came on peacock-coloured horses. Their duel was splendid.
Ashwattama blocked Prativindhya. Duśśasana’s son stopped Arjuna’s son Śrutakīrti from advancing toward Droṇa. Śrutakīrti broke his bow and banner, slew his charioteer, and moved closer to Droṇa.
Lakshmana stopped the coastal king but he broke Lakṣmaṇa’s bow and banner and struck him with many arrows.
Vikarna blocked Śikhaṇḍi. Shikhandi covered him with arrows. Vikarṇa cut them all down.
Angada stopped Uttamauja. Their duel thrilled all.
Durmukha opposed Purujit. The 5 Kekaya brothers attacked Droṇa, but Karṇa blocked them. They covered each other so fully that neither chariots nor horses could be seen.
Your sons Durjaya, Jaya and Vijaya checked Nīla, Kāśya and Jayatsena. Their fierce combat thrilled the onlookers,
Droṇa’s kin Kṣemadhūrti and Bṛhanta stopped Sātyaki. They fought fiercely.
Cedi king blocked the Ambashtha King. With a strong dart, the Ambashtha king killed the Cedi king.
The Vṛṣṇi hero Vardhakṣemi rushed at Droṇa but was stopped by Kṛpa with sharp arrows. Both focused only on the fight.
Somadatta’s son stopped Maṇimant. Maṇimant shattered his bow, banner and umbrella and threw down his charioteer. Suddenly Bhūriśravā cut Manimanta’s horses and charioteer & beheaded Maṇimant.
Taking another bow and driving his own chariot, Bhūriśravā began destroying the Pāṇḍava ranks.
The Pāṇḍya king charged at Droṇa. Vṛṣasena stopped him in a fierce duel.
Ghaṭotkaca hurled many weapons at Droṇa & scattered the Kaurava army. Slaying and terrifying warriors, he pushed toward Droṇa. The rākṣasa Alambuṣa opposed him; their duel was fierce.
Dhṛṣṭadyumna stormed the Kaurava ranks and attacked Droṇa. Droṇa confronted him. Like this many kings clashed.
Never had I seen or heard such a battle. Amid the armies many separate combats took place-some dreadful, some wondrous, some terrifying,” said Sañjaya.
Dhritarashtra asked Sanjaya “When the Kauravas confronted the warriors who were fighting separately, how did Kunti’s sons fight? Did Arjuna gain victory over the śamsaptakas?”
Sanjaya said “Your son Duryodhana attacked Bhima with the elephant forces. Bhima became enraged.
He thought of killing Duryodhana & pierced his body with many arrows. Even then Duryodhana smiling shot arrows at Bhima. Bhima swiftly cut his banner and bow with two bhallas.
Seeing their king in distress, Angada angrily mounted an elephant, and confronted Bhima. Pierced by Bhima’s arrow, the elephant fell down & died. Angada intended to fall to the ground along with it. But meanwhile Bhima shot a bhalla and severed his head.
As that hero fell, the army fled. Horses, elephants panicked and ran amok trampling soldiers.
Bhagadatta mounted his elephant and swiftly confronted Bhima. The elephant coiled its trunk and used both front legs to attack Bhima. Bhima ran & with blows of his hands struck it repeatedly. He tried to avoid being caught by it. It bent Bhima with its trunk and kicked him with its knees. Bhima created the illusion of being caught, escaped from it, again rushed at it, and waited to see whether another elephant from his army would come.
A great confusion arose in the Pandava army. They were afraid that Bhima was dead. Dharmaraja also thought Bhima had died. Along with the Panchala army, he restrained Bhagadatta.
The Pandava army shot hundreds of thousands of sharp arrows at Bhagadatta. Bhagadatta deflected those arrows with his goad.
