The Austin seven was an economy car that was produced from 1922 until 1939 in the United Kingdom by Austin. Some 290,000 were produced in a huge variety of body styles. It was also licensed and copied by companies all over the world including BMW, Rosengart and even Nissan.
In Australia even the Australian Grand Prix was won by an Austin seven in 1928. After the Second World War, many Austin sevens were rebuilt as specials and their components provided the basis for a considerable number of race cars by Lotus, McLaren and in Australia by Elfin. Thousands were dismembered and turned into fibreglass bodied sports cars at minimal cost.
Most were powered by 747 cc engine giving 10.5 hp. A three speed gearbox with reverse was integral with the engine initially, followed by a four-speed in 1932. The chassis was unbelievably simple and to say that the car was compact is a gross understatement by today’s standards.
In Australia several small coach builders built limited numbers of sports models. The Austin seven Meteor was built by several coach builders such as Flood motor body works, Jack Lonzar and Robinson & Co.
Ross Warner of Sydney has acquired one of these and here is his story.
