Join David and me on an IFR flight and instrument approach to minimums into an airport at the base of the Appalachian Mountains. See how the 2 panel Aspen EFD-1000 in David's Beech Debonair N8539M compares to Garmin's G3x in my A36 Bonanza when we fly in real IMC.
Located on the eastern edge of the Appalachian Mountains, flights into Hickory Airport (KHKY) usually offer beautiful views of the foothills. Low IFR, strong winds and turbulence made this approach into the mountain airport quite challenging. On the missed approach, we make a climbing turn into rising terrain with no visual references and solid red on the terrain map in front of us, keeping us on the edge of our seats.
It's a nasty, bumpy, windy day to fly instrument approaches on the east edge of the Appalachian and Blue Ridge mountains in North Carolina.
