Описание: Four miles beneath the Pacific, the USS Johnston stands upright on the slope of
an undersea trench with her gun mounts still trained outward. She is one of the two deepest
shipwrecks ever found, and she is down there because of what she did on the
morning of October 25, 1944.

Off the island of Samar, a Japanese fleet of 23 warships came out of the haze,
led by Yamato, the largest battleship ever built. In their way stood Taffy 3,
thirteen small American ships built for patrol work and submarine hunting. The
biggest shell anywhere in the formation weighed 55 pounds. Yamato's weighed
3,200.

The Johnston turned into them alone, without orders. She closed to point blank
range, emptied all ten torpedo tubes, and blew the bow off a heavy cruiser
before they finally sank her. The Japanese fleet turned around and left.

In 2021, a submersible found her at 21,180 feet.
