My solution to adding Alexa control to a garage door. There are lots of videos about doing this for a door with a single switch (up or down), but not seen anything to deal with doors that have a switch for up with a separate switch for down mode.
This uses a SONOFF 4 Channel PRO r2 device. About £30 from Amazon. (Note/Update in 2021 this is up to around £45 but the more recent version is cheaper. Sonoff Ch4 R3 is around £26 and the pro version £35. The standard model is fine, pro adds RF option for remote control add on, both models remove the quick release clamps on wires and revert to standard screws)
Set the toggles inside on S6 to a 1 (inching mode), then set the channels you want to inching mode by moving the channel on K5 to a 1 for inching mode. Finally select how long the key press is for the toggles in K6.
I set mine to
S6 - 1
K5 0,0,1,1 - so channels 1 and 2 are inching mode, 3 and 4 are normal switch on or off
K6 1,1,1,1 - so the inching time is 1 second
(Note/Update - newer R3 version is a software inching mode rather than switches and can be set for up to 1 hour, the R2 is a maximum of 16 seconds. )
The door control is ELLARD and has screw terminals for 0v Ground, and UP, STOP and DOWN.
When you short the 0vGround and the UP for a second, the door goes up, when you short the 0v Ground and DOWN the door goes down.
Connecting the Channel 1 of SONOFF to UP and the Channel 2 of SONOFF two DOWN means you can make the channels turn on for 1 second and send the signal from SONOFF to the door controller.
The wiring is UO (Usually Open) and that is the wire to connect to the OPEN or CLOSE terminal in the door controller, the COMmon wire from SONOFF goes to the the 0vGround wire. To avoid running 2 wires to the 0v Ground in the door I ran one, and then linked that in the SONOFF with a short jumper wire.
I ran the power from the main power in on the garage door opener to also power the SONOFF, connecting the LIVE and NEUTRAL from the BROWN and BLUE connections in to the garage door controller into the N and L of the SONOFF. It can operate on low voltage too like a phone charger or Xmas tree lights power unit.
The SONOFF is connected to WIFI and uses and app called EWE Link, set up account and you can see the 4 switched on your phone screen, also can be connected as a skill with Alexa.
Now set up in Alexa for a routine that when you say “Alexa, Open Garage Door” it sends a request to EWE Link and it will call channel 1. Then set another routine for “Alexa, Close Garage Door” and it will do the same but hit channel 2.
The Channel 1 and Channel 2 are marked up as DOOR OPEN and DOOR CLOSE for use inside the garage, whilst the original controller buttons still work too.
OPTIONAL
STEP 2 - I also wanted to try to connect the garage light to the door controller being open/closed.
In the Alexa app I also have the open door routine to hit channel 3 and set to on. When you close door it hits channel 3 and turns it off. (As a backup, I have also got the goodnight or turn everything off option in the house to hit channel 3 of the SONOFF to kill the light, so if it is on for some reason it will knock it off at the end of each day. You could set a timer if you wanted).
Wiring for this: I had a single line switch for my garage light and wanted to retain the option to use the switch even if the WIFI was down, or SONOFF was down etc.
So I took my light switch which was wired up as COMMON (Power in)and L1 (Out to the light), and I wired as follows:
Power coming in goes to Channel 3 COMMON on SONOFF. UO and UC from SONOFF go to the L1 and L2 of the switch (either way around), then the COMMON from the light switch now goes onwards to the light.
This means that the light switch will work but if you toggle the light switch, you end up with on being off, and off being on. So I covered the switch with tape to stop it being used as standard.
The SONOFF is marked up as LIGHTS ON so that is now the light switch for inside the garage.
Note/Update - by 2021 I have moved on and removed the eWelink and sonoff cloud reliance and moved to operating this device via homeassistant and through tasmota and mqtt. Not necessary but for the record all works just fine.
Hope someone finds this helpful.
