This project turns a simple Light Dependent Resistor (LDR) into a surprisingly accurate color checker. By pulsing an addressable LED through red, green, and blue, the sensor measures how much light is reflected from a surface. Each color creates a unique reflection pattern that the code matches to the closest color name… all in less than a quarter of a second!

With just a 10k LDR, a microcontroller, a button, and a small display, the setup delivers results that feel way beyond the simplicity of the parts. A custom shroud ensures the LDR only sees reflected light, making the readings reliable. Orange, for example, reflects strong red but weaker green and blue, which makes it easy for the code to recognize.

It’s proof that even basic sensors can be pushed to do much more than you might expect.
