This interview is a part of a series organized by the ITA Academic Council to record the evolution of modern international arbitration in the words of those who have led it.
This interview was recorded in Houston on January 17, 2025, during the 13th ITA-IEL-ICC Joint Conference in Houston.
In July 2021, CLAUDIA SALOMON became the President of the International Court of Arbitration of the International Chamber of Commerce (ICC Court), the first woman in this role in its 100–year history. Claudia is widely recognized as one of the leading arbitration practitioners of her generation, with more than 25 years’ experience representing parties in some of the most complex, high value and significant disputes. She brings her experience of representing clients to the Court, driving a client-centric mindset. Claudia is also an independent arbitrator, specializing in international, investor–state and complex commercial disputes. She is a member of the New York Bar and a solicitor in England and Wales. She graduated from Harvard Law School, cum laude, and Brandeis University, summa cum laude with honors. She also studied at Somerville College, Oxford University.
MICHAEL MCILWRATH lives in Florence, Italy. He is the founder of MDisputes Srl (www.mdisputes.com), and previously spent 22 years as the VP of Litigation of multinationals in the energy industry, including Baker Hughes and GE Oil & Gas. He has held leadership roles in the governance of dispute resolution institutions, including ICC and IMI (International Mediation Institute), and was the chair of the Global Pound Conference in 2016-17. Additionally, he acts as an arbitrator and mediator, and is an adjunct professor at Bocconi School of Law in Milan, Italy. In Arbitral Women recognized him as a Champion of Change.
