Today I visited the humble yet deeply moving María Reiche Museum, dedicated to the life and work of an extraordinary woman — a German-born mathematician who embraced Peru’s archaeological heritage like no other.
At a time when very few Peruvians cared about the Nazca Lines, María Reiche dedicated her entire life to studying, measuring, protecting, and defending them. She lived simply, worked tirelessly under the desert sun, and fought against neglect, destruction, and indifference.
It is thanks to her investigations, passion, and persistence that the Nazca Lines became internationally known and were eventually recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Her legacy reminds us that one person, driven by love and conviction, can truly change the destiny of a cultural treasure.
Visiting her home and museum is a powerful reminder of gratitude, respect, and responsibility toward our past. Thank you, María Reiche — Peru and the world owe you so much. 🤍✨
