Abstract: For centuries, mathematics has been the language used by the natural sciences to describe physical processes. Our current theories are written using this abstract framework and we use it to model and make predictions about the behaviour of the universe. Hence, by construction, mathematics has a lot to say about the natural sciences. In this talk, I will tell you a story that goes in the opposite direction: an instance where physics gave us insights on mathematics. More precisely, I will discuss Witten’s proof of the Morse inequalities, which he obtained using supersymmetric quantum mechanics arguments. If time permits, I will tell you more spooky stories where physics played a role in obtaining abstract mathematical results.
