A Ming dynasty carpet from the 16th century is due to be put up for auction in Paris next month with a guide price of $4.6 million. A rare survivor from the original carpets woven to adorn the halls of the Imperial Palace within the Forbidden City in Beijing, it is currently at Christie's auction house in London.
Adorned with two five-clawed dragons and with a seed pearl at its center, it would have been placed on a raised platform upon which would be positioned the throne of the Emperor, the 'Son of Heaven' – signifying his connection between the earth and the celestial heavens.
Louise Broadhurst, Christie's Head of Oriental Rugs and Carpets, told CGTN Europe it is in pristine condition.
