We stopped at another Burke & Wills marker today and read something that hit hard — by 2061, these signs might be gone because they’re “too expensive” to maintain. These markers aren’t just metal; they’re the points where history actually happened. Without them, future generations won’t know where to stand and feel what Burke & Wills faced out here.
The land still holds their story, but if the markers disappear, a lot of that connection will vanish with them. That’s a big part of why we’re doing this trip — to retrace the tracks, keep the history alive, and show what’s still out here before more of it fades away.
