Welcome to Conversations at The Royal!
This session defines what it means to be a forensic client, differentiate between forensics and corrections and explain the legal criteria to be found Not Criminally Responsible due to a Mental Disorder (NCRMD). The implications of being found NCRMD will be discussed; in particular the double stigma that comes with such a label and its impact on clients and their family. Sections of the movies Out of Mind, Out of Sight and NCR: Not Criminally Responsible (from Director John Kastner) are shown.
This session also looked at the difference between forensic clients and criminals / psychopaths; How stigma develops in a society, the double stigma attached to the label "forensic client", the impact of being found NCRMD and the associated double-stigma for the clients and for their family; What we (i.e., the society, the clients and the families) can all do to decrease stigma, promote recovery and successful community reintegration.
