In a leaked voice recording, Hong Kong Chief Executive Carrie Lam is heard saying she would step down if she could. But when asked about those comments today, Lam told reporters she has never offered her resignation to China over the anti-government protests that have roiled the territory. Since June, hundreds of thousands have taken part in pro-democracy protests in Hong Kong, which were touched off by controversial proposed legislation put forward by Lam's government that would have allowed extraditing suspects from Hong Kong to mainland China. She has since announced the suspension of that bill.
