For this stage, Sun Jian and his officers will advance on the right side of the map to enclose on the enemy castle. The goal is to surround Liu Xun, so you are intended to travel along the left side of the map and approach him. You definitely want to approach him from the FRONT and not the rear. Because Liu Xun will attempt to retreat if he realize he's been surrounded ,which will cause you to lose if he escapes. You can cut him off if you approach from the front, so do so.
Yuan Shao sends Zhang He and others to support Liu Xun and you can actually outright kill Zhang He here. Kinda surprising, but I guess it hardly matters since he doesn't show up again in Wu's musou mode normally anyways.
Taishi Ci also appears to stop you from reaching Liu Xun. Defeating him will cause him to reappear in the stage as reinforcements. And I'm not sure, but I think this also triggers him to arrive as reinforcements in later battles as well. After all that, we then have to defeat Liu Yong to finish the stage.
