Les Boréades is an opera by J. P. Rameau composed in 1763. Rameau never saw it performed or published, as he died the following year, and since then it has been forgotten and was performed in the middle of the last century and entered Paris in 2003 in his Complete form of 4 acts.
Recently it has become better known due to the transcription and beautiful interpretation by Vikingur Ólafsson which can be easily found on Youtube under the title "Les Boréades: The Arts and the Hours". ( • Víkingur Ólafsson – Rameau: Les Boréades: ... )
The piano reduction is lovely and the sound is a pearl of the Baroque. When listening for the 1st time I fell in love and looked for the score - which was something difficult given the lack of sources for this piece. Fortunately, I found something on IMSLP with an arrangement by Andreas Edmund - which I really liked (he has 3 versions since 2015 available, the last one I think is the easiest to play).
However, the Sonority of Ólafsson's performance was magical, so I took the trouble to listen, listen and write my own arrangement, which borrows many of the characteristics of the bass line that Ólafsson plays, but is not present in Edmund's arrangement.
And as always, the songs I publish here are notes from the bike I play them.
It's a Baroque piece, but I left a pedal note for the piano. In the repetition of section A, I perform period arrangements in order to create a contrast with the 1st passage of it, which I leave clean and without ornaments. Section B is without ritornello, but that's why I liked this approach given by Oláfsson. Still, you can at the interpreter's discretion run the ritornello - as it has it in the original. But I think it's too long and the transition isn't as contrasting as from A:B. I felt it was asking for a resolution even without re-presenting the theme in section B.
As I said, it is very difficult to find a piano score, so I hope you enjoy and give your like to the arrangement because it took a lot of work.
Hope you have fun playing!!
