Psalm 71 chanted in the Sarum Use by Sarah James
Themes: The prophet, in confidence, prays for God's favor, recounts God's kindness to him from youth to old age, shows what his adversaries plot against him, and prays for their confusion, promises fidelity, and determines to be a diligent preacher of righteousness even in old age, takes encouragement in God's mercy, and foresees the confusion of all his adversaries. There is no title to this psalm either in the Hebrew or Chaldee; and the reason is, it was written as a part of the preceding psalm, as appears by about twenty-seven of Kennicott's and De Rossi's manuscripts. The Vulgate, Septuagint, Ethiopic, and Arabic, have, "A Psalm of David for the sons of Jonadab, and the first of those who were led captives." (From the Adam Clarke Commentary, 1831)
In Judaism: Verse 19 is part of Tzidkatcha, which is a prayer of three verses that are recited during the afternoon prayer on Shabbat. It is said in memory of three righteous individuals, Joseph, Moses and King David, who died on Shabbat. It is recited at this time of day because they died in the afternoon. (Wikipedia)
Nine hundred years ago, the Cathedral of Salisbury, England developed a unique form of chant and liturgy known as the “Use of Salisbury,” or “Sarum Use.” Differences from the Roman rite are both melodic (more florid in the Sarum) and textual (Elizabethan English rather than Latin). The best repository of Sarum Use tones is the St. Dunstan's Plainsong Psalter, from which Sarah has sung this psalm. Additional resources on Sarum Use plainsong at https://canticasacra.org.
