‘Green Industry’ is a globally emerging industrial development practice where symbiotic connections among materials, energy, natural systems and local communities become the central factors in the production process. The factory building for Karupannya Rangpur Ltd., designed by Architect Bayejid Mahbub Khondker and his team, is a pioneering example of such ‘green industry’ initiatives in Bangladesh. The industry celebrates its success in managing energy and waste in sustainable ways while empowering local women who make up the whole workforce of its manual production line. The factory building, with green façade of climbing plants, passively ventilated indoor spaces and integrated closed-loop water cycle management, rightfully reflects the ‘green concept’ of sustainable industrial development. The following essay by Noshin Tuba is an account of her personal experience of visiting the factory.
