Описание: Achmelvich is one of the most famous beaches of Scotland. Its tropical vibe, bright, soft sand, blue water and rocky surrounding are truly making it to stand out amongst beaches of Scottish mainland. Achmelvich is located in the north-western part of the country in the most magical area of Sutherland, just a few miles west from Loch Assynt. In fact Achmelvich has three beaches. The main one is named Achmelvich Beach of course. Second one, located around a hundred meters to the north, behind a small hill is called Vestey's Beach. It is only a little smaller then the main beach, but it much more secluded, because access is available only via narrow path and some rock scrambling or by the sea. Third beach, only 20 or 30 meters south from the main one, is called Sinky Beach and it is much smaller and accessible by going around the rocks at the lower tide or by climbing down the cliffs at high tide. Similarly like other famous beaches of Scotland, Achmelvich has a campsite nearby called Shore Caravan Site. In my opinion it is one of the best campsites in Scotland, with great, clean amenities, quite good Fish'n Chips (which is not usual for Scottish campsite) and a little shop. The only bad thing about the campsite is the fact it can be quite busy and noisy, hence the beach is also getting quite crowded at times. Of course not as crowded as beaches much closer to main cities like Portobello or Irvine, but busier than most of northern beaches.
Next to the campsite, on the rocky peninsula stands the smallest castle in Europe, called Hermit's Castle. It is actually habitable. There is a place for the bed, a little fireplace and set of shelves inside. The castle is a concrete, brutalist folly built in 1950 by architect David Scott as his small bothy. Weirdly, he only used it only once and it stands abandoned ever since. Despite its angular form, the castle is blending perfectly into the rocky cliffs around it and is actually not that easy to find.
The beach is quite popular due to the fact it is located just 2 miles away from the most scenic roads of NC500, B869 between Loch Assynt and Clachtoll.
