Madras, December 1975. The December dusk hangs tenderly over the Music Academy, where lamps glimmer like patient stars through the corridors lined with teak and memory. The Dikshitar Bicentenary Season is in full bloom — each evening a garland of reverence offered to the master of mantra and melody.
It is the 5th evening of the Season. As the tamburas awaken and the soft rustle of silk settles into silence, a figure draped in deep crimson and gold steps onto the dais, ML Vasanthakumari, radiant and resolute, her eyes alight with quiet mischief and spiritual fire.
From the opening invocations of Gananayakam in Rudrapriya, her voice moves like flame — alive, flickering, unbound. Through the stately Swaminatha Paripalayasumam and the rare grace of Smaramyaham Sada Rahu in Ramapriya, she unfolds a landscape where scholarship meets instinct, where precision dances with abandon.
The hall breathes with her — through the luminous calm of Sriranjini, the serene devotion of Annapurne Visalakshi, the tranquil shimmer of Yamuna Kalyani. When Mohanam unfurls, it is as though the very air brightens; each phrase is sculpted in light.
Then comes Thodi. Vast, ancient, oceanic. In Sri Krishnam Bhaja Manasa, her music gathers the weight of centuries and releases it in waves of rapture. By the time she weaves through the grand Chaturdasa Ragamalika and the gentle Kurinji of Sri Venugopala, the audience sits spellbound — caught between sound and silence, earth and ether.
Nearly fifty years later, we return to that sacred night — digitized from the original master spool, preserving every resonance of her voice, every pulse of that hall, every breath between devotion and divinity.
Step back with us to The Music Academy, 25 December 1975 — to MLV, in full bloom, singing Dikshitar.
