Before the TCG launched in late 1996, there was another way to collect Pocket Monsters in Japan: the Bandai Carddass vending machines. In today’s video, we are stepping back into 1996 to explore the "pre-history" of the hobby.

I’m showcasing my near-complete Carddass File Series master set featuring the iconic original watercolor artwork by Ken Sugimori. We’ll break down the history of these "crank-handle" vending cards, explain the difference between the File Series, the Anime Collection, and the sticker-based Sealdass, and top it all off by opening a vintage 1998 Anime Series booster pack.
