Banaras Locomotive Works (BLW), a key Indian Railways production unit in Varanasi, has manufactured 10,822 locomotives since its inception, including 7,498 diesel and 2,500 electric engines. In FY 2024-25 alone, it produced 472 electric locomotives. Formerly known as Diesel Locomotive Works (DLW), the unit was renamed BLW in 2020. Established in 1956, BLW also fulfills export orders and recently dispatched two of ten AC-AC diesel-electric locomotives to Mozambique. It developed India’s first bi-mode locomotive, the WDAP-5, in 2019, and currently specializes in electric models like WAP-7 and WAG-9.
