This evening, I started my bike and rode through the beautiful village areas of Bharananganam, Edamattom, Pravithanam, and Thalappalam, all of which are part of the Kottayam district in Kerala. As I traveled along these scenic routes, the weather was just right, making the journey even more enjoyable.
Bharananganam, a well-known Christian pilgrimage center on the banks of the Meenachil River, is rich in history and culture. Located about 4 kilometers (2.5 miles) from both Pala and Plassanal, the region thrives on agriculture, with rubber being the main cash crop. Historically, it was an independent territory under the Travancore Kingdom, governed by the vassal Kingdom of Poonjar. The area is also home to the legendary Church of Veluthachan, originally destroyed in the 11th century and later rebuilt on the opposite bank of the Meenachil River.
Due to initial confusion about its location, the church was named ‘Anakallitt Palli’ after an elephant reportedly chose the site. This region is also believed to be the birthplace of Kulapurath Bhima, a Brahmin from the Kulapurath family, known for building a fort in Poonjar. The population of Bharananganam primarily consists of Catholic Syrian Christians and Hindus. One of the most significant landmarks here is the thousand-year-old St. Mary’s Syro-Malabar Catholic Church, a major pilgrimage center for St. Thomas Christians in Kerala.
The church is renowned as the final resting place of Saint Alphonsa, the first woman from the Kerala Church to be canonized and the second Indian saint after Gonsalo Garcia, a Luso-Indian from Portuguese Bombay and Bassein. Saint Alphonsa was beatified by Pope John Paul II during his visit to India on February 8, 1986, with the Papal podium from the ceremony later being transformed into a two-story structure in front of the shrine.
The area is well-connected by several major highways. The Pala–Ponkunnam Road (SH-32) runs close to Bharananganam, providing easy access to nearby towns. The Pala–Thodupuzha Road (SH-8) is another important highway, linking the region to Thodupuzha and other parts of Idukki district.
Additionally, the Ettumanoor–Poonjar State Highway (SH-44) serves as a crucial route connecting Bharananganam and nearby villages to Kottayam and other major locations. These highways enhance connectivity, making it convenient for travelers and pilgrims to visit this historically and culturally rich region.
