Old Photos of Techirghiol Romania
Techirghiol, a small town in Constanța County on the western shore of Lake Techirghiol, has a history shaped by its hypersaline waters and therapeutic sapropelic mud, famed in local lore for healing “Old Man Tekir” and his donkey—a legend that echoes the area’s Turkish etymology (tekir = speckled/tabby, göl = lake). Situated in historical Dobruja, Techirghiol was part of the Ottoman realm for centuries until Northern Dobruja was integrated into Romania in 1878, after which the settlement developed into a noted spa resort. In the late 19th and especially the interwar period, sanatoria and balneary facilities multiplied as physicians documented the curative properties of the lake’s mud and brine; this profile was further expanded under the socialist regime, which built large treatment and recovery centers. Today, Techirghiol remains one of Romania’s best-known balneotherapeutic destinations, blending its Ottoman-era toponymy, modern spa heritage, and Orthodox monastic presence with a continuing reputation for health tourism.
