Because I am still figuring out the idiosyncrasies of the new TimberKing mill, I am continuing to opt for sawing logs that are not considered to be very valuable. Not to say the selected logs are of no value, its just that they are not furniture grade oaks, walnuts or cherry. I can afford to make bad cuts and remand the deformed remnants to the wood pile and lose no sleep at all.
Today we start off with a short and squatty Elm. The intention was to turn this one int short 24's because I have the perfect project for a few of them. As the story always goes, I got one look at the grain after the first cut or two and decided to cut live edge slabs. I thought there might could be that one guy out there in Marketplace-Land could use some expensive bargain basement material that can build superbly crafted projects that'd be the envy of any snooty high society lady's bridge club. Ok, the dream is over now....
Non sequitur note: Short and squatty materials are not the easiest to hold in place. They have a tendency to fall through the spaces between the bunks on the mill....at least one end does. Then you gotta figure out how to get the cumbersome and nasty looking chunk of dead wood back up and held down the meet the blade once again. Not fun, and I only did it once on this one.
Once we finished with the first elm, another one was begging to be the next guinea pig on the block so a second one ends up being separated by means of the hungry TimberKing bandsaw mill. By the end of the video, enough material was harvested to totally complete the small project which, by the way, ended up being the envy of the retired gardener of the same old snooty high society lady mentioned above. Ok, that might be a stretch, but you catch my drift I'm sure. #sawmill, #timberking, #wood,
