This is Part 1 of my contribution to the parliamentary debate on Labor’s deeply flawed Environment Protection Reform Bill 2025.
These reforms span more than 1,500 pages and were rushed into Parliament with virtually no consultation and inadequate time for scrutiny. While strong environmental protection is incredibly important—particularly for communities like ours on the Gold Coast—good policy must also be sensible and respect procedural fairness.
Under Labor’s plan, sweeping new powers would allow unelected bureaucrats to issue stop-work orders with no clear time limits, review processes or compensation. For small and family-owned businesses, marine operators, builders and local industries, this risks turning compliance into punishment and stalling projects indefinitely.
Environmental protection must go hand in hand with accountability, balance and common sense. Unfortunately, Labor’s reforms fail that test.
