Chapter 27: Rome Against Carthage
Rome, once a small city-state, expanded across Italy and became a republic ruled by a Senate of aristocrats. A long struggle followed between the rich patricians and poor plebeians, while slavery remained widespread. Across the Mediterranean, Carthage—wealthy and powerful—became Rome’s rival. Their century-long conflict, the Punic Wars, ended with Rome’s victory and Carthage’s complete destruction, establishing Rome as the dominant power of the western world.
Chapter 28: The Roman Republic Becomes an Empire
After defeating Carthage, Rome grew rich and corrupt as wealth flowed to the aristocrats and misery to the poor. Revolts, civil wars, and powerful generals like Pompey and Julius Caesar weakened the Republic. Caesar’s rise and assassination marked its end; his heir Octavian (Augustus Caesar) became the first emperor. Rome now ruled vast lands, but far from “the world,” it was only one great power among others like China under the Han dynasty.
