Sir James Stephen was the main person who drafted the Act.
A draft of the Act was introduced in the Council in Governor-General in India in 1871.
The Act came into force on September 1, 1872.

What does the BSA do?

Broadens the definition of evidence-
The BSA includes electronic and digital records as evidence, and gives them the same legal weight as paper records.

Expands the definition of primary evidence-
The BSA expands the definition of primary evidence to include electronic records.

Broadens the definition of secondary evidence-
The BSA broadens the definition of secondary evidence to include oral and written admissions.
Establishes rules for handling electronic evidence.

The BSA establishes rules for how electronic evidence should be handled, including the generation of a hash value for each piece of evidence.
