Ever eaten a bowl of crunchy cashews and not thought twice about where it came from?
You won’t look at them the same way again after this.
Once a lush, biodiverse evergreen forest — with canopies reaching up to 40 meters — parts of Goa are now turning into desert like so many wet tropical regions all over the world. This video explores Goa is witnessing severe soil erosion, loss of native species, and full-blown desertification due to unproductive and abandoned cashew plantations and other monoculture crops.
Discover why rainwater now washes away instead of nourishing the land, and why there’s no organic material left to even grow new life.
Cashew has deep roots in Goa, introduced by the Portuguese centuries ago. Traditionally, it was part of sustainable agroforestry. But now, modern demand, unsustainable farming practices and an ever more severe climate crisis are pushing both the environment and the people to a breaking point.
We also talk about the dangers of raw cashew eating and processing — from corrosive acids to health risks faced by workers.
And yet, hope remains. Even in the cracked earth, nature fights back. You’ll see native plants and resilient trees like the Devil Tree holding on — proof that this place isn’t beyond saving.
This is a story about more than just nuts. It’s about ecosystems, traditions, people — and the true cost of what we consume.
➡️ Let’s support SUSTSINABLE cashew farming and protect Goa’s natural heritage before it’s too late.
