This is a 'ration cards' charity program. We named it so because we track the supply through a 'ration card' printout, where the ration delivery is recorded on monthly basis. It is to provide basic ration items for free for senior citizens, who are either disowned by their family or lost their family members. It has been running successfully from Mar 2007 onwards, with the support of all the kind hearted people like you. This programme has gone through changes over time, in terms of number of beneficiaries and the items and their quantity too.
Coming to its background, my brother-in-law runs a grocery shop in Sullurpet, Nellore district, Andhra Pradesh, since around 1980. He's the president and active committee member of local association, for couple of decades. Much before 2005, he was tasked to identify the right set of people for various charity programs that were sponsored by the funding from philonthropists in Chennai. Many of the current beneficiaries have been his customers from 1980s/1990s and they keep chatting whenever they come to the shop or passing by, to share their share of grievances about how they got disowned by their children or lost them altogether, etc. This charity channel from Chennai made him start/maintain this list of beneficiaries. In the beginning of 2007, he has suddenly lost this supply channel as the primary association in Chennai has stopped donating for people outside of Chennai. He was left with so many beneficiaries while his supply channel was cut. That's when, he called me and it all has started!
Currently, we are providing 10kgs of rice, 1/2 kg tur dal and 250gm of Tamarind for each beneficiary family per month. This is costing around 7000 Rupees or 100 USD per month per head. Back in 2007, it has started with 12 beneficiaries and never gone below that beneficiary count. However, the items were started with 10kgs of rice and later on added and removed the other grocery items subjected to the funds availability and beneficiary count. Almost at the start of every winter, we are providing a blanket for each of them.
World Teacher Trust has started supporting this programme from Mar 2020 onward and currently supporting all time maximum number of 40 beneficiary families.
Thanks for all your kind support.
