All right, Matt with etrailer. And today we're talking about the Yakima HighRoad Bike Rack on top of our 2024 Jeep Compass. Now this can be a great option for you, especially if your hitch is already being used by either, maybe you have a cargo box in the back or you're hauling a trailer behind you. And if you have a roof rack, you'll be able to use this rack. So let's check it out. The HighRoad's gonna be a great option for you if you have bikes under 45 pounds because that's gonna be the weight capacity of it on the road.
It's gonna drop to 27 pounds when you going off road though. And honestly, I'd recommend putting your lighter bikes on here anyways because at the end of the day, when you are lifting up your bike, that's a pretty high lift. Even though the Compass isn't that tall, you're still probably gonna struggle a little bit, especially if you are pushing that 45 pound mark. Honestly, I'd recommend sticking to more of your lightweight bikes or your carbon frame bikes. To really show you what I'm talking about when I'm talking about how heavy your bike is when you're putting it up there, let me show you how it's gonna look when you take it off.
So I'm gonna come over here to the rear tire to begin with. I'm gonna press this button and this is gonna release my strap. (mechanism clicks) You're just gonna be able to press in and pull this out. What's really nice about this strap too is, (mechanism clicks) I have it going the opposite direction, but you can have this facing either way. (mechanism clicks) So you can actually remove this strap and put it on the other side if you wanna make things easier for yourself.
And then I'm gonna move over to the front side. What I like to do is find some point that's not gonna move on me, on my bike. So you can grab up here on your frame and start to loosen your clamps. And what I really like about this design is it really is optimized for your carbon frame bikes because it's only gonna attach to the tires. Once this is loosened up, you'll be able to feel that disconnect, and lower this down.
(mechanism clicks) You might need to wheel your bike back just a little bit. I haven't loosened this all the way yet, so I need to just do that tad bit more. (mechanism clicks) And from here you can just grab on to your frame and lift up. I like to grab onto my forks too because this is gonna be a pivoting point. With that off, I can take it for a ride, but that, as you could see, that was a pretty high reach. You could also step in your vehicle and grab a friend with you to kinda make that easier. But just to show you, you can take it off while you're on the ground too. And with the bike removed, you just make sure that this bottom clamp is lowered all the way. You can lower that the rest of the way just by loosening up that knob. With that done, you can grab the other side of the cradle and just lower it, just so everything's sitting flush on your roof. And on the backside you'll notice we have this cradle we we're working with earlier and that can actually slide up and down this tray and that's gonna be able to accommodate different variety sizes of wheel bases. And at the very end, we are gonna have this integrated bike cable lock and that's gonna be for extra security so no one can come by and take off your bikes. And the way this is going to attach to your vehicle, like I said, you're gonna need crossbars and you're gonna have this rubber strap that goes all the way around and connects to the other side and hooks into place. Once it's hooked into place, this is going to give you a very secure fit. (mechanism clicks) Even when I shake it, it just shakes my entire vehicle. And the way you lock it into place, you'll find that we have a knob at the very top that you can push in. I'll give you an idea of how this is gonna look on top of our roof, I can get a few measurements. The first one I'm gonna get is the overall height. So just going from our crossbar, to the top of our carrier, that's gonna sit at about five inches, which isn't gonna be too bad. If you don't have anything loaded in it at the moment definitely make sure you're taking the full height of your vehicle, plus your crossbars and the carrier, just so you know what areas you can make it under, anywhere like a garage. But you should be fine in most cases. When you really have to think about your clearance is when yo
