The Seafang featured a "laminar flow" wing, which was thinner and sharper than the classic elliptical wing of the original Spitfire. This allowed for much higher speeds - reaching nearly 475 mph - but it also made the aircraft's stall characteristics much more aggressive.
The contra-rotating props were the Mk 32's secret weapon. By having two sets of blades spinning in opposite directions, the aerodynamic forces canceled each other out, providing perfectly straight acceleration down the deck. Despite being an engineering masterpiece, only 18 were ever produced. The Royal Navy realized that the Hawker Sea Fury was a more rugged piston option, while the upcoming Supermarine Attacker jet offered the speed of the future. The Seafang became a "prop too far" - a pinnacle of technology that was obsolete before it even entered mass production.
"It was the perfect answer to a question the Navy stopped asking."
