Open Access Journal models can be confusing, Gold, Diamond, Hybrid, and Green all work differently.
This video explains each journal model clearly so researchers can choose the best publishing route.
This video explains the four major Open Access Journal models used in academic publishing: Gold OA, Diamond OA, Hybrid OA, and Green OA. Understanding these models helps authors choose the right journal based on cost, visibility, and funder requirements.
Journal Models Covered in This Video
Gold Open Access Journals
Articles are permanently free for everyone to read. The Article Processing Charge (APC) is usually paid by the authors, institutions, or funding agencies. Gold OA journals offer high visibility and strong citation potential.
Diamond Open Access Journals
Just like Gold OA, but no APC is charged. These journals are free for both authors and readers. They are often maintained by societies or major publishers.
Hybrid Journals
Subscription journals that offer two options:
• Publish as subscription-only (no charge for authors), or
• Publish as open access by paying an APC.
Authors choose which model fits their needs.
Green Open Access (Self-Archiving)
Authors may upload their preprints or accepted manuscripts to repositories such as arXiv, institutional archives, or personal websites—depending on journal policy.
Why This Is Important
Funder policies in the USA, Canada, and Europe increasingly require Open Access publishing. Choosing the right open access journal model improves visibility, citation impact, and compliance.
