Influence of Material Characteristics on the Kinetics of Sodium Ion Battery

ABSTRACT:
Lithium-ion battery (LIB) is one of the most used conventional types of battery. However,
there are some problems with it like: lithium is less abundant on the earth’s crust, and they are
explosive in nature and expensive. Owing to the problems related to lithium-ion battery it is
necessary to find alternative for it and sodium is one of the elements that is best suitable to be
used as an alternative to lithium. Sodium has a very similar chemistry and characteristics to
lithium also sodium is abundantly available on the earth’s crust.
A lot of research and development has been carried out with respect to lithium-ion battery
however research on sodium ion battery is still in progress. Internationally – Faradion, a UK
based firm demonstrated world’s first sodium ion battery –powered vehicle and has patent
over it. Sodium ion battery is not commercialized in India yet, but research is going on the
same for the materials which will produce more efficient battery.
One of the ways to improve the pace of research in sodium ion battery is sodium ion battery
modeling. This will play a vital role in accurate estimation of the various parameters and
features of the battery. Many such models have been studied with respect to lithium-ion
battery however not many models are established to study sodium ion battery.
Taking the battery into consideration, an important aspect lies in understanding the kinetics of
ions in the battery. This research work deals with kinetics-based output expected in sodium
ion battery and how it differs when the materials are changed.
