The adorable 2 month old baby Bornean Orangutan's Father is Willie and is his 4th offspring at Chester Zoo
Leia has an older daughter Dot living with her at the zoo, big sister to Maria
Leia holds baby Maria close to her warm body, baby is alert at sat upright, taking in her surroundings and gazing at her family members, who are grazing a playing nearby

A Newborn baby orangutan has been born at Chester Zoo to mom Leia and Father Willie
Maria's big sister Dot has been frequently visiting her mom and new baby sister and mom is letting her get close to the baby and allowing her to bond gradually with her. Dot has been coping with the new arrival by playing and interacting more with her aunt Sarikei and half siblings Tombol and Myrtle, and the occasional interaction with her alpha dad Willie
The new baby was born on 7th October 2025 to Mother Leia and Father Willie
Leia is an experienced mother orangutan who has a daughter Dot who lives with her and the rest of the Bornean Orangutans at Chester Zoo

Chester Zoo is has a very successful record of Orangutan births at the zoo and most of the Orangutan Mothers are able to rear their own young without the assistance of zoo staff, this is largely due to the expert care and facilities the World Class Zoo provides for the animals.
The current animal population have had valuable experience with babies and have observed relatives caring for young, using this learning and experience to enable them to rear their own offspring
Birth of critically endangered orangutan at Chester Zoo
Bornean Orangutans have been considered critically endangered since 2016 with an only an estimated 100,000 left in the wild. They are seriously in danger of extinction which makes the birth of all baby orangutans very special indeed
