NIO currently has two large SUVs performing strongly in China's competitive market: the premium NIO ES8 is a clear leader among high-end pure-electric models, while the more affordable ONVO L90 (part of NIO's family-oriented sub-brand) is a significant volume seller. However, it's important to note that the overall top-seller across all powertrains (including plug-in hybrids) is currently the Huawei-backed AITO M8.
To help you see the competitive landscape, here is a comparison of key models in the large 3-row SUV segment:
Model Brand / Sub-brand Key Market Position & Sales Starting Price (Vehicle Purchase) Notes
NIO All-New ES8 NIO (Premium brand) Leader among pure-electric SUVs priced ¥400k; delivered 22,256 units in Dec 2025, a record for its price range. ¥406,800 Total deliveries surpassed 40,000 units by late Dec 2025.
ONVO L90 ONVO (Family brand) Annual sales champion among large pure-electric SUVs for 2025 with 43,439 units in 5 months; sold 5,970 units in Nov 2025. ¥265,800 Price can drop to ¥179,800 with BaaS rental.
AITO M8 AITO (Huawei-backed) Overall market leader; sold 16,284 units in Nov 2025. ¥359,800 Offers both pure-electric and range-extended versions.
Zeekr 9X Zeekr (Geely) Competes in the ¥500k segment; sold 8,121 units in Nov 2025. ¥465,900 A high-end competitor that overtook the AITO M9 in Nov.
📊 Understanding the Large SUV Market in China
The large 3-row SUV segment saw explosive growth in 2025, driven by demand from multi-child families and attractive profit margins for automakers. The competition is fierce, with clear price segments:
Premium Segment (¥400k+): Led by the NIO ES8 among pure-electric models, competing with the Zeekr 9X and AITO M9.
Volume Segment (¥200k-¥400k): Where the ONVO L90 competes with models like the Lynk & Co 900 and Denza N8L.
Affordable Segment (Below ¥200k): Includes models like the Geely Galaxy M9 and Chery Fulwin T11.
In terms of technology, pure-electric large SUVs like the NIO ES8 and ONVO L90 saw their sales hit a record high in November 2025, surpassing plug-in hybrid and range-extended models for the first time.
🏆 NIO's Strategic Success
The success of both the ES8 and L90 is central to NIO's overall strategy. The new ES8, with a starting price over ¥100,000 lower than its previous generation, quickly became NIO's fastest-ramping model. Meanwhile, the ONVO L90 used NIO's Battery-as-a-Service (BaaS) model to bring the entry price for a large SUV below ¥200,000, driving significant volume. NIO CEO William Li stated that these two SUVs have "reshaped the competitive landscape" in their respective markets.
