Niguliste kiriku vaateplatvorm — Parimad vaated Tallinna vanalinnale tornist.
Observation deck of St. Nicholas' Church — The best views of Tallinn Old Town from the tower.
One of the most beautiful and oldest churches in Tallinn is the Church of Niguliste (Niguliste kirik). It was built by merchant settlers from the island of Gotland who came to the capital of Estonian lands and formed their own community. The church was built in honor of Saint Nicholas - the patron saint of sailors and fishermen - around the 13th century. Only the ancient portal, which faces Niguliste Street, remains from the building of that time. The first written mention of it dates back to 1316. The modern appearance of the building dates back to the 15th century, when the church underwent significant reconstruction, acquiring the appearance of a basilica
Even then, the building was used not only as a church but also as a fortress (since it was originally located outside the city walls), and partly as a warehouse for storing valuable goods. The first tower of the church was probably built in the 14th century, but the Order, which was in charge of the city at the time, forbade making it high so that it would not become a lookout point. A new tower was only erected between 1505-1515, and then due to decay, it was rebuilt in 1695, when it was decorated with a Baroque spire by Rupert Bindenshaw (who also designed the spire of Saint Peter's Church in Riga)
From the 15th to the 18th century, several chapels were added to the Church of Niguliste: to the south - the Chapel of Saint Anthony, to the north - a narthex with the main entrance, in 1673 - the burial chapel of Gustav Adolf Clodt, who was the Swedish governor in Estland, decorated in the Baroque style, and in 1773 - the burial chapel of Governor-General Peter August von Holstein-Beck.
The church is built in the traditions of Estonian Gothic. It is angular, concise, and aspires upwards. As for its interior, it is striking in its lightness and abundance of light, favorably highlighting the Church of Niguliste against the backdrop of other capital's sacral buildings
Closer to the heavens! A lift takes visitors up to the "heavenly floor" through three floors, from where a unique view of the Old Town, Tallinn Bay, and all four cardinal directions opens up. The lift and the heavenly floor, resulting from extensive construction work, are unique in Estonia. The lift allows all visitors, including those with special needs, to reach the top of the tower, and the restored staircase allows for a thoughtful study of the architecture and details of the tower between floors
The museum located in the Church of Niguliste is one of the few museums in Northern Europe situated in a sacral building, allowing the artworks there to be viewed in their natural architectural context. The central exhibits of the museum are the altarpiece retables created in the Netherlands and North German cities, and, of course, the masterpiece "Dance of Death" by Bernt Notke from the late 15th century. The jewel of the exhibition is the collection of church silver, the silver of the Brotherhood of Blackheads, and that of the guilds and crafts
It is a popular spot not only for tourists but also for locals, as, in addition to exhibitions, various concerts, including organ concerts, are held in the church
