The 50th anniversary of the Soviet Union's defeat of Nazi Germany came just four years after the collapse of the Soviet Union itself; the Russian Federation celebrated the anniversary with a large military parade in which Soviet symbols were conspicuously absent. On Lenin's mausoleum, the revolutionary's name was covered with greenery, while hammers and sickles were removed from flags.
