A trademark is a legal and business tool that allows you to have a unique identity in the marketplace. Any special element that you use to promote and distinguish your business (and the services or products you sell) from others can be a trademark. To apply for trademark registration, an application is filed together with the appropriate documentation and fee to the Canadian Intellectual Property Office (or CIPO for short). The application undergoes stringent examination to ensure it meets the requirements of the Trade-marks Act.
