Professor David Dunn says the U.S.–Greenland talks made it clear that Washington and Denmark are fundamentally at odds, with the U.S. trying to change a status quo that clearly favors Danish sovereignty. He argues that Trump’s talk of “having” Greenland sounds more like an imperial impulse than a serious security strategy. While a U.S. military takeover seems unrealistic, Dunn warns that with Trump, norm-breaking behavior cannot be completely ruled out. Europe, he says, has finally drawn a hard line because this issue cuts to the heart of international law and NATO credibility. The small European troop deployments to Greenland are symbolic but deliberate, meant to show resolve and create deterrence. In Dunn’s view, this isn’t about defense at all – it’s about territorial expansion, and that’s why Europe is pushing back so firmly.
