The Park Ranger Who Mapped the Wrong Forest

There are sections of forest that don’t feel hostile. They feel organized. I didn’t notice it at first. I was mapping an interior stretch of timber, marking ridgelines and creek bends like I’ve done a hundred times before. The trees stood evenly spaced, the ground firm beneath my boots, the air cold and still. Too still. When I stopped walking, the wind didn’t pass through me - it paused. My GPS didn’t lose signal. It returned to the same coordinate again and again, no matter how far I moved. I recalibrated twice. The numbers corrected themselves. The land did not. That was the first moment I felt it - not danger, but adjustment. Like something was measuring the shape of my presence.
The forest didn’t chase me. It didn’t need to. The birds would stop mid-call, not startled - suspended. Branches would hold their sway as if waiting for a cue. Even my own footsteps seemed slightly delayed, like the ground was practicing the sound after I made it. There was a faint metallic dampness in the air, subtle and misplaced, threading through pine and soil. The longer I stood within that boundary, the more I understood something I wasn’t trained to recognize: I wasn’t observing the silence. The silence was aligning around me. And once it finished, I wasn’t entirely sure I would still be separate from it.
For the best experience: Put your headphones on and turn down the lights.
