Welcome to La Plata Dental! Periodontal disease, or as it's also known, gum disease is an infection of your gums that causes gum inflammation and bone loss. It's possible to have gum disease and not know it as there aren't many obvious symptoms, however it is something that your dentist can discover during an exam. Periodontal disease is treated through a procedure called scaling, which is a deep cleaning of the teeth under the gums. The procedure is done in two parts, with each appointment cleaning a different side of your mouth. Once done, additional maintenance cleanings every few months should keep the issue under control.
