The junta had promised to hold elections in July 2024, and hand power back to a civilian government. But Traore and his junta have decided to cling on to power till at least 2029. And whenever elections are held, Traore says he will stand for the presidency. Burkina Faso's junta orchestrated a coup after popular anger against the elected government for failing to deal with terrorism. Has the junta forgotten its purpose?
