President Obama stepped off Air Force One at Bagram Air Field --where he was greeted by U.S. Ambassador to Afghanistan Karl Eikenberry, and General Stanley McChrystal.
It was Obama''s first visit to the country as president.
In a meeting with Afghan President Hamid Karzai and his cabinet, Obama said he was pleased with recent progress in Afghanistan.
But he also pushed for more accountability, greater vigilance against corruption, and better governing.
According to a U.S. account of the meeting, Karzai told Obama he has begun to establish more credible national institutions on corruption -- and intends to make ministerial appointments more representative of the country''s ethnic and geographic diversity.
The president also invited Karzai to come to Washington later this spring.
Afterward, the president was greeted with thunderous cheers as he addressed U.S. troops at Bagram Air Field.
"our broad mission is clear...we are going to disrupt..and dismantle al Qaida and its extremist allies..that is our mission."
In December, Obama ordered 30 thousand additional forces into the fight against the Taliban.
Those new U.S. troops are still arriving and are expected to be in place by the summer, for a full force of roughly 100 thousand U.S. troops.
