In Levi's childhood and throughout his entire life, we find a Recurring theme of Loss. First he lost his biological father, whom he had never met, then he lost his mom at a young age, got pseudo-adopted by his uncle, Kenny-but lost him too, and then witnessed his two best friends get mangled a titan.
This, and his rough beginnings causes him to display abrasive and antisocial tendencies, makes him keep other people at a distance, and makes him incredibly competent at SLAYING TITANS.
